Beginner Friendly Mat Pilates Classes
What is Pilates Strength?
Pilates Strength is a full-body mat Pilates class with an added focus on resistance training.
Alongside Pilates-based core and stability work, you’ll practise movements such as squats, lunges, hinges, rows and presses using heavier dumbbells, and other small equipment.
Rather than simply moving through a sequence, you’ll work through clearly structured exercises designed to challenge your muscles and help you become progressively stronger over time.
Every movement is demonstrated and coached, with options to suit different experience levels.
How is Pilates Strength different from Mat Pilates?
Both classes are low-impact, carefully coached and designed to improve strength, stability and body awareness.
Our traditional Mat Pilates classes place more emphasis on controlled bodyweight movement, core strength, posture, balance and muscular endurance. Pilates Strength uses heavier loads and more external resistance and strength-training exercises to create a greater challenge for the major muscle groups.
It is a great choice for anyone who enjoys Pilates but wants to place more emphasis on building full-body strength.
Is Pilates Strength the same as Reformer Pilates?
No. Pilates Strength is a mat-based class and does not use reformer machines. Instead, we use heavier dumbbells combined with traditional strength training principles to help you build muscle and get noticeable stronger over time.
This gives you the opportunity to learn fundamental strength-training movements, gradually increase the challenge and build confidence using weights. Both styles can be valuable, but Pilates Strength offers a more direct way to develop strength within a supportive, coached Pilates class.
Who is Pilates Strength for?
Pilates Strength is ideal for people who want to become stronger but aren’t sure where to begin.
It’s ideal if …
you know strength training is important but don’t feel comfortable in a gym
you want more challenge than bodyweight exercise alone
you would like personalised guidance with your technique
you are new to using weights
you already attend Pilates and want to build greater full-body strength
you prefer small-group classes with clear, supportive coaching
You do not need to be fit, flexible or experienced before starting.
What are the benefits of Pilates Strength?
With regular attendance, Pilates Strength can help you:
build full-body muscular strength
improve core control and stability
become more confident using weights
learn foundational strength-training movements
improve balance and coordination
support everyday movement and physical capacity
maintain strong muscles and bones as you age
The exercises are adjustable, so you can begin at the right level for you and gradually increase the challenge as you become stronger.
Strength training without feeling lost in a gym
Many people want to get stronger but don’t know which exercises to choose, how heavy to lift or whether they are performing the movements correctly.
In Pilates Strength, your teacher leads the entire session.
We demonstrate each exercise, explain what you are doing and help you select an appropriate level of resistance. You will always know what comes next and how to adapt the movement to suit your body.
You don’t need to plan your own workout, use unfamiliar gym machines or figure it out alone.
What to expect in class
Each class includes a guided warm up, a full body strength workout, plus a dedicated Pilates core finish. You’ll stay on your own mat the whole time, and you won’t share equipment. The vibe is calm, strong and focused on technique, control, and progressively challenging yourself over time. The goal is to challenge your muscles (not your sanity) so you’ll leave feeling stronger, maybe a little sweaty, but definitely not fried. Think low impact, heavier weights, stronger muscles and a more stable core.
How often should I attend?
For the best results, we recommend completing two strengthening classes each week. You might attend Pilates Strength twice weekly, or combine it with one of our other strengthening classes such as Mat Pilates or Flow.
We also recommend including one recovery-focused class each week, such as Yin or Gentle Flow, to support mobility, recovery and consistency.
Is Pilates Strength suitable for beginners?
Yes. Pilates Strength is designed to be accessible to beginners.
You do not need previous experience using weights, and you will be shown how to perform each movement. Your teacher can help you choose an appropriate resistance and offer different options throughout the class.
The class is designed to challenge you, but you will never be expected to already know what you are doing.
Can Pilates Strength help me build muscle?
Pilates Strength is designed to challenge your muscles using resistance.
When you attend consistently and select resistance that feels appropriately challenging, the class can help you build and maintain muscle as part of a well-rounded exercise routine.
Your teacher will encourage you to progress when you are ready, rather than using the same resistance indefinitely.
What if I have an injury or I am pregnant?
